Mini Tournament Report from 18th March

Dumfries Saints RFC Mini Rugby Tournament

On Sunday 18th March Dumfries held host to over 300 players aged from Primary 4 to Primary 7 from Ayr, Annan, Cumnock, Langholm, Moffat, Newton Stewart and Stewartry for the annual mini section tournament. We were very lucky with the weather as it was a dry and sunny.

In the P4 section unfortunately Dumfries were unable to complete a team so to allow all the boys the opportunity of games they teamed up with Newton Stewart to play some excellent rugby. Darroch, Sam & Campbell fitted well into the team but despite their best efforts Ayr won the trophy.

Dumfries P5’s had Moffat and Cumnock in their group. After a draw in their first game against Moffat, Dumfries went on to win their remaining 3 games to progress to the final. Their success was built on excellent tackling which put pressure on their opponents. In possession the boys supported the ball carrier very well and scored several tries from good passing moves. In the final against Ayr the opposition opened the scoring and a couple of memorable try saving tackles stopped Ayr taking a decisive lead. 2-1 down at half time Dumfries showed determination to go on and win the trophy 4-2.

The P6’s first game was against Moffat which was a very physical game with Moffat scoring first but Dumfries came back in the second half through a Matthew Currie try. The tackling in this game was ferocious but Dumfries were unable to score again and the match ended 1-1.

Their next game against Cumnock was again very physical with Dumfries running out worthy 1-0 winners with a try from Finlay McMaster. Sadly not enough to go through to the final as Moffat beat Cumnock 3-1. However, in the tie for third place against Langholm, Dumfries played a blinder and ran out 3-0 winners, again scores were from the Currie, McMaster partnership. This was a small squad with no replacements but everyone stuck to the task in hand and played great rugby. Matthew Currie was awarded Player of the Tournament for the P6s.

Dumfries P7’s first game was against a Stewartry & Cumnock combined team. With early pressure from the opposition Dumfries managed to score 2 trys, the first from Gavin Wilson followed by Jack Roberts. Two up at half time Gavin started with an early try which was quickly followed by a try from Jack Bain. Scott McLellan set up the 3rd try in the second half scored by Jack R with Jack also managing the best tackle of the game. Dumfries won 5-0.

Dumfries played a closely contested game against Ayr. Gavin scored the first try in the dying minutes of the 1st half after a good pass from Fraser Marshall. BJ kicked off the second half with Dumfries 2nd try. A great break through resulted in another try for Jack R with a fantastic final score by Nathan Brown after a good set up from Gavin with a final score of 4-0. Both Gavin and Scott scored trys against Newton Stewart to finish 3-0. With their final game against Langholm ending 5-0 with new boy Travis scoring his first try, Dumfries became P7 Tournament winners having never conceded a try in any of their games.

A big thank you from the Mini Section at Dumfries to the referees, pitch runners, parent volunteers and sponsors. Special thanks to Mrs Brown for presenting all the trophies and medals.
