Dumfries Colts 28 v Jed Thistle 0
Borders U18 Plate Final 26th March 2011 Mansfield Park, Hawick
With both teams coming into this game not really knowing much about each other this could have been a very nervy game. This could not have been further from the truth as both side started with a lot of energy.
Apart from some indifferent lineout play from Dumfries their dominance of the scrum and most of the loose play knocked back the Jed Thistle team. This was evident after 5 minutes Dumfries pressure caused Jed to give away a penalty in front of the posts converted by full back Ben Johnstone.
Then only 5 minutes later Taylor Hyslop playing centre today rather than his normal wing position burst though the Jed first line of defence running from his own half using his pace he then ran past the remaining Jed team to score Dumfries’s first try.
Dumfries continued to pressure Jed for the rest of that half with Jed only getting the best of Dumfries in the lineout area. Decisions did not quite go Dumfries way when on at least 5 occasions on the Jed 5 yard line they gave away a penalty away. So the half ended, with the score 8-0 to Dumfries.
The second half was even more dominated by Dumfries, with Taylor Hyslop getting his second try after 45min and Gordon Proctor scoring a pacy try at the 55min stage this gave Dumfries a very strong 18-0 lead. Ben Johnstone did not convert either try this however did not stop him from putting over a 45yard drop kick to make the score 21-0 to Dumfries with 12 minutes to go.
Euan Millar also had a run though the Jed team with only one of their team able to stop him after running half the pitch. This and continual pressure from Dumfries gained an opening for Taylor Hyslop to get through and to selflessly when heading for his hatrick, pass to his centre partner John Carlisle for Dumfries’s fourth try which John converted as well making the final score Dumfries Colts 28 – Jed Thistle 0.
