Dumfries Saints RFC v Hamilton Bulls RFC

Saints extend their winning streak

Dumfries Saints 1st XV maintained their impressive unbeaten record on 16th September with a 46 – 22pts home win over Hamilton Bulls – giving them 3 wins from their opening games in the Tennent’s National League Division 2 (Men’s). The win follows victorys against Falkirk (29-26) and Gordonians (27-12).

Conditions were ideal for open-running rugby and Saints applied most of the play with a good mix of forward pressure and open running from a lively set of backs. In particular, the Saints lineout dominated the opposition to win good possession. Their efforts paid off with four tries (2 converted) from Thompson, Johnston, Martin and captain Jack Steele, to secure a comfortable half-time lead by 24pts to Hamilton’s 7pts (single converted try).

The second half was again open and entertaining – with the visitors coming more into the game and putting Saints under a bit more pressure. However, Saints’ balance of forward driving and running from the backs proved decisive in the end with Saints marking up four more tries (one conversion) – one from Tatham and a superb hat-trick from Daniel Henderson. In reply, Hamilton answered with 3 tries – to bring their final score to 22pts.

Full time score Dumfries 46 – Hamilton 22.

Saints President Sharon Hiddleston commented after the game “This early form is all the more pleasing as it’s been achieved with a good mix of our ‘older’, experienced players and a highly promising set of new young team members. Things are definitely looking good for the rest of the season.” Sharon added “The 1st XV winning form is great –

and even it’s more encouraging that it’s mirrored by all our other teams across the age structures – the 2nd XV, Colts and the various age groups – boys and girls. Our junior training sessions are booming – so much so that we’re appealing for “Volunteers” to help to manage the extra demand.” If you think you have something to offer – you can e-mail Sharon on

Saints 1st XV are facing strong opposition when they travel to face Glasgow Accies on Saturday (25th Sept) with both teams aiming to extend a 3 wins start to the season. The 2nd XV have a home fixture against Greenock Wanderers RFC in the West Reserve League Division – kick-off 3.00pm at Park Farm.
