We were so sorry to hear of the death, last week, of past Dumfries player John Fair.
John played fullback for Dumfries 1st XV back in the 60s and was well known for his hard tackling and drole humour. When his playing days ended with cracked ribs (plus a quiet word from his pregnant wife Alison) John made himself useful at Park Farm. Each Saturday he would clean out the baths and generally tidy up then take the rugby balls home to treat them with dubbin to soften the leather and ensure the balls were waterproof.
Being an architect by profession, he was also involved with the planning of our present clubhouse..
A Scotland rugby picture was kindly donated to the Club by John a few years ago and it hangs in the Committee Room at Park Farm.
John enjoyed sport and in later years, along with Alison, joined Maxwelltown Bowling Club. They both became keen bowlers and played in lots of pairs competitions together around the area.
Our thoughts are with Alison and family at this sad and difficult time and we offer our sincere condolences on the death of John.
