1st XV v Preston Lodge 17.3.18

Preston Lodge 12     Dumfries Saints 50

Second top Saints travelled east to the bitter cold and flurries of snow to take on second bottom Preston Lodge. Saints playing with pace and ambition had them under pressure within a few minutes and were awarded a penalty 5 metres out. Opting for the scrum Michael Scott picked up at number 8 and drove for the line laying it back for Craig Goldie to finish. John Carlisle converted to take it to 0 : 7.

Twenty minutes into the game the Preston Lodge tight head prop suffered a back injury, the game was held up and an ambulance called to take him direct from the pitch to hospital. Thankfully it was muscle damage and however painful was not too serious. The game restarted after a 50 minute delay and within minutes Sam Hiddleston entered the line on an angled run that took him through the PL defence to score out wide. The conversion was missed.

From the restart Saints went right back into the PL 22 from a line break by Andrew Whiteford and after a couple of recycles put Jack Johnstone over in the corner. The conversion was missed 0 : 17. Again after sustained pressure Saints got a 5 metre scrum and after a couple of pick and goes Scott Goodwin powered over for John Carlisle to convert, 0 : 24.

The game continued in the PL half and a line break by Keagan Jones drew the last defender and put John Carlisle over for try under the posts which he converted, 0 : 31. A great angle from Jack Steele on half way took him all the way to the line, John Carlisle converted and they went into half time 0 : 38.

As the weather deteriorated PL staged a comeback and a break out of their own 22 saw there wing forward go over at the posts, the conversion took the score to 7 : 38.   Within minutes John Carlisle went through a gap in the PL defence on half way drew the full back and offloaded to Jack Johnstone for his second try. John Carlisle converted taking it to 7 : 45.

Preston Lodge got settled in the Saints 22 for a long period and tested the Saints defence and eventually pressed over in the corner. The conversion was missed, 12 : 45. As the snow started to come horizontally Saints turned over PL deep in the Saints 22 and the ball went out to Jack Steele who ran the length of the park into the wind to score under the posts.  The conversion was missed and that was the final score finishing the game 12 : 50.

Saints miss a game this weekend due to Aberdeenshire dropping out of the league and are next in action on 31st March in the National Cup Semi Final against St Boswells away. A supporter’s bus will be travelling with the team and a large turnout would help see them through to the final.
