Saturday saw Dumfries Saints participate in two local warm up tournaments, in all 36 players took part. The senior squad went to Annan and the junior squad went to the Moffat Tens. At Annan the Saints started off against Penrith, the Cumbrians were a big side but from the start struggled with speed of the Saints.

Wingers Rory Steele and Johnnie Sloan caused early problems and after the sides traded penalties a Sloan break eventually led to a Tom Hiddleston try. Within minutes a Jamie Little turnover at the ruck released Sam Hiddleston for a 60 yard solo effort. Up 17-3 at half time Saints looked comfortable and in the second half they let rip and the tries flowed with Rory Steele (2), Jamie Little, Ben Stanley and Andrew Whiteford. Final score 52-3.

Next up Saints faced a fresh Annan side. The doonhamers started slowly and Annan certainly won the first half on points, their rush defence cramping the Saints backs and their forwards looking half a yard sharper. With no score at half time Annan go the vital break through early in the second half. A missed tackle was all that was needed to get in behind the defence and despite some terrific cover defence they made the line to take the lead. The remainder of the game saw Saints on top territorially but lacking the composure and discipline to score. They had their chances but didn’t take them.Final score 5-0.

Saints went into the third place play off with Upper Eden determined to get back on track. The Cumbrians had no answer to their mobility and they ran out comfortable 29-7 winners in a shortned game. Tries were scored by Jamie Little, Sam Hiddleston(2) and Rory Steele (3). It was a worthwhile exercise with 21 players getting valuable game time, the youngsters Finley Miller, Rory Steele, Adam Taylor and Andrew Whiteford all did well and showed great promise for the season ahead.

At Moffat a young squad did extremely well to make the final only to be beaten by our old friends from Carlisle Creighton RFC. Despite having the territorial advantage in the final the Carlisle side had a flyer who made two long distance breaks to win the final by two tries to nil. Again a good workout for all 15 players involved augers well for the season ahead.
