Following the winter break for the local S1/2 Development league, Dumfries Saints S1 team took advantage of the recent spell of good weather to play their away tie with Newton Stewart. This tie was postponed from November 2011 due to a waterlogged pitch.
Prior to kick off, the team were presented with their new match tops, sponsored by SBS uPVC building products of St Marys Industrial Estate in Dumfries. The tops were presented to team captain Ewan Kennedy by team coaches Phil Hair and Kenny Henry.
The game itself was a very one sided affair, with Newton Stewart out classing Dumfries in every area. The score ended 41:0 to Newton Stewart.
There were some good individual performances with Thomas McKerlie being awarded man of the match. This was his first competitive game for the team and he showed some great promise for the future. Thomas Jackson was awarded the trophy for outstanding skills, particularly his trie saving tackles.
The game on Sunday has given the coaches lots of area for improvement. With this in mind, training will now take place at Park Farm, New Abbey Road, Dumfries on Tuesday evenings from 6 – 7.30pm commencing on Tuesday, 21 February.
Our next development league game is an early kick off on Sunday, 26 February 2012 at Moffat at 10am. This will allow us to play the game and then either get to Murrayfield to cheer on Scotland or to get home to watch on TV.
