u/18 Dumfries Saints Colts v Strathaven u/18 Colts
Saturday 18th January 2020
After nearly a month’s layoff from match play the Dumfries Colts welcomed Strathaven to Park Farm. Weather conditions on the run up to the game had not afforded too many training opportunities. However, the conditions were clear and the prospect of a good opening game in the West Region Cup beckoned. Past performances from both sides suggested that this was going to be a keenly contested fixture.
Right from the start the Saints Colts applied pressure to the visitors and were rewarded by an opening try by David Sharpe. Peter Young duly added the extra points. The game then seemed to take on a bit of a lull with both sides spending time in each other’s halves but not scoring. Eventually, the deadlock was broken by Ben Watson driving over for typical forwards try. This galvanized Strathaven into action and they scored two tries with one conversion. The scores were now even. Again the game seemed to be in a bit of an equal balance until saint’s Captain Gregor Hiddleston drove over for a try in the corner. Half-time and the game was pretty evenly balanced.
The half-time talk was given but again the Saint’s Colts seemed to be lacking the necessary drive and determination. Substitutions were made and positions altered. This seemed to produce a more positive playing performance from the team and Euan Muirhead made full use of his blistering pace to score. This seemed to settle the Dumfries boys and capitalizing on his change of position to flanker Kyle Colchester, with his first touch of the ball, drove hard, low and with real determination to score under the posts. Muirhead duly converted, he was also awarded player of the match. Final score 29-12. The next round of the cup will be against Ayr who have an enormous squad of players to draw on.
