Stewartry U16s 0 v Dumfries U16’s 24

Dumfries travelled to Stewartry in this rearranged cup tie to take on a Stewartry side that ran them close in the same fixture last season.
Harry Houlday was missing from the Carlisle victory due to a hand injury so Edward Jackson moved across to second row leaving an impressive back row of Declan O’Donnell, Kyle Lindsay now recovered from his ankle injury and Sean McDougall continuing at No. 8 scaring the life out of defenders with his strength and speed. Russell McQueen made his debut for the season back on the wing.
Dumfries backs moved the ball very quickly and home players Alex Craig and Ian McKnight in the Saints colours got the bragging rights off to a great start with a score each after swift backs moves. Ian hit the post with the first conversion but scored the second. Stewartry proved to be a dogged team and held Dumfries out but Dumfries defence had to be strong at times also with some great tackling on display.
Half Time Stewartry 0 Dumfries 12
The second half started with Euan McMorran replacing Edward in second row and Captain Declan O’Donnell moving to scrum half replacing Lewis Morrison who was getting a hard time from Stewartry scrum Half Lewis Young.
Jack McHenry was having one of his better games in the loose continually being the link between rucks and the backs with great handling.
Dumfries had Stewartry camped back on their own line and from a scrum 5 metres out Declan was quickest to react to a loose ball to force over the line for a score in the corner.
This spurred Dumfries onto the finish line and after trying to run the ball from their own line a massive clearance from Callum Fitzpatrick got the play into the home 22 for James Clyde to peel off a ruck to score a converted try.
In the last 15 minutes Dumfries were reduced to 14 when Ian McKnight was deemed to have tip tackled his opposite number to face a red card.
With no more scores Dumfries were pleased to keep a clean sheet in defence and looking more like the way they played last year.
