Ardrossan U16’s 10 Dumfries U16’s 38

Dumfries travelled to Ardrossan in the last league match of the cup competition knowing that a win would put them into the semi final of the Glasgow Shield competition. Jack McHenry called off on the morning off the game with an illness to miss his first match for Saints since he started in S1 and with Harry Houldey, Paul Gibson and Ian McKnight also missing, Saints travelled with 15 and Euan McMorran started his first match at second row. Declan O’Donnell showed his versatility by playing at Full Back.

Saints thought this would be their toughest match but within 10 minutes they were three tries up, Russell McQueen outstripped the defence to run down the wing and round behind the posts, Callum Fitzpatrick caught the ball from kick off and smashed his way through to score and Alex Craig waltzed his way through the defence to score under the posts. James Clyde took over kicking duties scored all three.
An exercise of hitting bags at training in pods finally paid off when Sean McDougall set it up from a line out and three pods later Jack Pybus outsprinted the defence to score in the corner for a fantastic score.
Sean McDougall completed the first half scoring after a quick ruck Russell McQueen gave a short pass and he bull dozed over the line.
Ardrossan scored a late unconverted try from a quick tap penalty in front of the posts.
Half Time Ardrossan 5 Dumfries 31
The second half was littered with interruptions after Alex Craig did a replica of his earlier waltz to score under the posts again to give James Clyde an easy conversion.
Ardrossan pulled a try back later after a number of penalties Dumfries conceded in front of their own posts but they never had any answer to the strong running Saints.
Saints 16’s are now through to the Glasgow Shield Semi Final v Waysiders/Drumpellier away, to take place on Sunday 23 September, 2012.
