Dumfries Saints 1 st XV
Tennents National League 2
Newton Stewart 6 Saints 15
Newton started strongly and put Saints under a lot of pressure. After a couple of penalties
Andrew Whiteford was unfortunate to be sin binned after the referee judged a deliberate
knock on. Newton converted the penalty to go 3-0 up. Saints responded and with Whiteford
back on the pitch scored from a number 8 pick up as Ewan Miller went over from a 5m
scrum to make the score 3-5. Newton responded with a penalty to take the lead 6-5 after 20
minutes. Saints went straight back down into the other end and again it was Captain Miller
who scored from a pick and go. Jack Steele slotted the conversion to make it 6-12 at half
time. Saints enjoyed more of the territory in the second half and despite a lot of ball could not
get over the Newton line due to their strong defence. Saints’ defence was also strong when it
needed to be. With 10 minutes left Jack Steele slotted a penalty to give Saints a 6-15 lead.
Saints saw out the remainder of the game comfortably to record a victory in the first
competitive local derby between the teams for many years.
