P4 Cumnock
The p4 team travelled to Cumnock to play at the festival of rugby . There were 5 teams in the round robin event . First up for the saints was Strathaven which was a closely fought match with Craig McWilliam scoring early to get his first ever try for Dumfries . Fergus Clanachan scored two and Stewart Roberts got one – for a 4 tries to 2 victory .
The second game was against a stuffy Cumnock side who were well drilled and good at passing the ball around. Too many missed tackles by Dumfries allowed Cumnock to get an early lead. Some good tackling by Calum Trotter and Logan Murdoch helped prevent Cumnock from scoring again. Tries from Fergus and Stewart helped produce a respectable 4 – 2 defeat.
Next up was Irvine who looked a much larger team than ours but the boys all played their part especially James hunter and Kerr Hamilton, both producing fine tackles considering the size difference. Kier Patterson was passing some nice balls from the rucks which opened up space for both Fergus and Stewart to score again. This game was narrowly lost 4-3. Only afterwards did we find out this was Irvine’s p5 team so a big well done to the p4 saints.
Finally the last game was against the unbeaten Garnock team. Caleb Robertson and Mark Philips were to the fore in this game with some strong breaks from Caleb and a couple of try saving tackles from Mark. Fergus and Stewart scoring some lovely individual tries with fantastic footwork and showing great evasive skills. Final Score 4-3 to Garnock .
All in all a great day out. The Dumfries team played against a lot bigger opposition and showed good determination.
Stewart and Fergus were both awarded 2 man of the match medals each .
