S1’s versus Stewartry Sunday 7th March
Some of the boys were in a winning but smaller squad against Cockermouth last week 6 tries to 4.
One of our first games of the season was an away trip to Stewartry and came away losing a last minute try beaten 6 tries to 5. This was an opportunity to express what team spirit has been built up mainly in the swimming pool over the winter and to work on tackling and off loading when going forward. Our front row must be the biggest of all S1’s around and with Stewartry boys looking a bit apprehensive at facing our front row at the first scrum! Moving the ball at every opportunity to Jack Pybus or Reece Morrow on the wings is our tactic and with Kyle Lyndsay coming into the line whenever possible resulted in how 4 of the 8 tries were scored. But it also shows by keeping the ball in close and getting into the habit of sticking the ball up our jumpers works too as Ben Herries was on the end of a 20m maul to dive over. Matthew McIlorum shows why he is at centre and tackled his heart out for everybody else to pick up the pieces and Matthew was awarded by a tap penalty to score easily later on. From such scraps Ryan Sarahs out sprinted the defence and right at the end the best move of the game showed how off loading in the tackle should be done with Rory Perkins on the shoulder to sprint home. Ryan kicked 4 conversions and Jack McHenry the other to give a final score of 29 points to 18. (3 points a try and 1 for a kick) A great confidence building performance and shows how the boys are coming on. But they can’t forget that 5 tries were conceded mainly by Stewartry having a couple of boys that were great runners.
It was encouraged that it was entirely an S1 team on the pitch at the end.
The boys were very complimentary on the referees performance.
It is hoped Annan will be the visitors this week.
