All the family will enjoy the sporting party atmosphere at the Dumfries Saints Annual Sevens Tournament at Park Farm, New Abbey Road this Saturday, 10th April. The first games will be kicking off at 1.00pm with the Finals scheduled for 5.00.

Sevens is a variant of Rugby Union in which teams are made up of just seven players instead of the usual 15, and with much shorter matches – just 7 minutes each way – played as part of a knock-out tournament. As one game finishes, the next one starts. The game originated in Melrose and is now played enthusiastically throughout the world. With its thrills, spills and straining lungs, it has recently gained Olympic recognition, and will make its debut in the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Back at Park Farm, the action will be fast and furious throughout the afternoon with teams from Dumfries and Galloway, Edinburgh and the Borders including Selkirk, Jedforest, Gala and Hawick battling to gain the upper hand … If it all gets too much for you, then you can always drop into the clubhouse for refreshments!

The Saints are hoping for great things this year. Last year, they were committed to playing a league fixture on the day of their Sevens, but put out a second team which won the McTurk Shield. With no other fixtures this Saturday, Saints are free to put out both a first and second team. It would be a fantastic achievement if Dumfries teams could lift both McDonald Cup and the Mc Turk Shield. Watch out for low flying champagne corks if they do!
