This was the first game of the season for the under 15’s with a local derby versus Annan.
There was a big gulf in difference in the U14’s last season but Annan have built up a squad this season at U14 and U15 and gave Dumfries a hard game.
An early injury to Connor Gracie meant George Nairn played at hooker having not played there before and Lewis Morrison came on at scrum half for his first game.
From the scrum restart Dumfries moved the ball wide and scored in the corner through last years top scorer Jack Pybus to score in the corner. Callum Fitzpatrick converted.
Dumfries took the game to Annan and playing with the poor weather in their backs repeatedly cleared the ball for the quick runner Russell McQueen to chase. It wasn’t long before another score came and again from a move to flying winger Jack Pybus to score in the corner. The conversion was missed.
Annan were up for this match and competed really well and were determined not to make it easy for Dumfries and spoiled a lot of moves and the game became scrappy but the rain and heavy ground didn’t help.
Dumfries were gaining the upper hand and from a touchline move Callum Fitzpatrick playing at 10 instead of 8 squeezed up the touchline to score to make all three tries in the same corner. The conversion was missed.
Just before half time Dumfries finally managed to get the ball through the hands to find Harry Houldey on the wing to slide in to score an unconverted bonus point try.
HT Annan 0 Dumfries 22
The second half was a tousey affair with Dumfries under real pressure at times but repeatedly cleared their lines through either Annan giving away penalties or from great defending. So for the second half to have no score showed how tough it was for the Dumfries boys but they held out for a clean sheet and a bonus point win.
Connor is making a speedy recovery and we hope to see him back playing soon.
