Saints lift the A.A. MacPherson Memorial Trophy in local derby match
The weather Gods which had been battering the area for the previous week took brief pity on the squads from Annan and Dumfries who met on Saturday for the annual derby match. At stake was the A.A. MacPherson Memorial Trophy is in memory of the late Alex MacPherson (Mac) who died in 2007. Mac was President of the Annan club in 1983-84
The brief respite in the weather meant that conditions underfoot on the Violetbank1st team pitch were much better than we all expected. That in turn lead to an entertaining encounter. The 1st half was a close affair but Dumfries ran in 3 tries to Annans 1 to lead 15-5 at half-time.
The 2nd half started with Annan challeging for every ball – but the game remained scoreless 20 minutes. A 2nd try from Annan reduced Saints lead to 15-10 – leaving the last quarter with all to play for.
Saints rallied from the early onslaught and were not to be denied as they ran in 2 further tries to end up 27 – 10 winners.
All money raised on the day i.e. gate money, raffles and collections will be donated to Creighton player Barry Scott who was seriously injured at Violetbank on 16th November playing against Annan 2nds.
