Another great effort by Saints Colts Sevens at Scotstoun

It was a great honour for Dumfries Saints Colts to be invited to the IRB 7’s along with the other top 15 club or school sides in the country – and they took the opportunity to play on the big stage with enthusiasm.

The tournament format was a straight 10 minute game and Saints were drawn against Madras from St Andrews in the first game. Tries from Declan O’Donnell, TJ McCarney and Harry Houlday in the first 5 minutes got them off to a great start and Madras had yet to touch the ball but Saints took their foot off the pedal to allow Madras to score a late try but won the game 15 – 5.

GHA were up next.  They had beaten favourites, George Watson’s College, in the first round. The Colts had beaten GHA in the 15-a-side game three times already this season but Sevens is a different game.  GHA  were very quick and slick in their passing and raced into a 3 try lead.   Sean McDougall, nursing a broken nose, pulled a try back for Kyle Lindsay to convert.  That gave the Saints some hope –  but a thrown away pass and a clever cross kick gave GHA a win of 20 points to 7.

GHA went on to the final on the main pitch but were defeated 12 – 5 by Dundee who have won all the 7s on the circuit this season.

Another fantastic effort from the Saints lads who will be all the better for this experience.
