Tennents National League Division 2.
Saints 52pts : 12pts Whitecraigs
Saints won their penultimate league game of the season against a struggling Whitecraigs side who were attempting to stave off the threat of relegation.
Saints started brightly with Sean Graham scoring after 90 secs following a series of close in pick and drives. Whitecraigs replied shortly after when their right winger sliced thro’ the home defence to level matters at 5pts each.
This galvanised Saints into over-running their opponents, hitting them with 4 tries before the break, thro’ Sam Hiddleston(2,) Joe Strain and Rob Douglas with Alan Birdsall converting 3 to leave Saints 31:5 ahead at the break.
Saints emptied the bench and made positional changes for the second half, which began in similar fashion to the first half, with Whitecraigs scoring a converted try after 5mins. Scrums became uncontested as the visitors pressed hard in an attempt to gain two more tries, for a vital bonus point, but Saints defence held firm and then countered with 3 further tries from Birdsall, Douglas and Ben Johnstone. Birdsall converted two to leave the Saints comfortable victors against a stuffy Whitecraigs who, following results elsewhere, will remain in Nat 2 next season.
Biggar are confirmed as league champions and are likely be joined in promotion by Highland, unless they lose two of their final three games. Lasswade are relegated with Howe of Fife most likely to join them in Nat 3 next season.
