Dumfries Saints 3 Highland 11
This game was always going to be a tough match with both teams haven’t conceded a lot of points and were both aiming for third place in the league. Highland were a big pack and some strong runners in the backs and Dumfries matched them until half time when both teams hammered at each other but there was no score for either side.
Dumfries were not firing on all cylinders and were missing touch with their kicks and the usually reliable James Clyde had only one kick out of four for his efforts. Scott Goodwin managed a score but with the referee on the wrong side of the ruck it was not given. Instead Highland scored a try in the corner to prove the match winner and then added two late penalties to wrap the game up.
U18 manager Grahame Abbott said ” Both teams were a credit to the cross Border League with some real tough challenges from start to finish, the Saints defended superbly at times but the visitors just shaded it”
The Highland coaches were complimentary by saying the Dumfries pack were the best challenge they have had this season.
Highland are now 4 points behind Dumfries with a game in hand. They play West next week and if they win by 34 points they will finish in third place ahead of Dumfries. With Ayr and Stirling both winning they will finish first and second respectively.
