On a dry and slightly chilly afternoon, perfect conditions for rugby, Dumfries Saints Colts welcomed Dalziel to Park Farm. Dumfries kicked off managing to keep Dalziel in their own 22 for the first 10 minutes to create an opportunity for Edward Martin to score the first try of the game which Edward then converted.
The Saints quickly settled into the game, setting the pace and a combination of good forwards play and releasing backs allowed both Owen Davies and Finn Mitchell both to score with these once again converted by Edward. Taking advantage of sloppy defending by the Saints and too many penalties given away in their own half, Dalziel managed to score two unconverted tries before half time.
After dominating the first half Saints were slow to get going again and defense was put under pressure by Dalziel but they stood strong while the opposition tried time and time again to break through. Dumfries seemed to gather themselves together and Jack Bain broke their line on multiple occasions to put Dumfries back into Dalziel’s half. With some good pick and go’s by Alasdair Wilson, Aiden Mackay and Liam Grierson, Nathan Brown powered over the line for the first of his two trys.
Securing the restart Dumfries made the most of the space with Andrew Neill passing to Gareth McHugh who made 30 meters down the wing to pass to Finn for his second try.
Grant Wilson secured the restart and with some strong forward work between him and Euan Murray the ball found its way to Jay Burns on the wing, cut inside into the Dalziel half with a penalty being awarded to Dumfries for a high tackle and some quick thinking by Captain Scott McLellan who powered over the line for an easy conversion for Edward.
Again, through carelessness, Dumfries found themselves defending against a determined Dalziel who ran from the halfway line and a catalogue of missed tackles by Dumfries saw Dalziel score their final try. Dumfries decided they weren’t finished for the day and Nathan managed to score below the posts having lost a boot! Final score Dumfries 47- Dalziel 15
