1st XV v RHC 10.12.16

RHC 8   DUMFRIES SAINTS 48

Dumfries Saints 1st XV travelled back to Edinburgh for the return fixture against RHC after a disappointing defeat the week before against  Lasswade.  Determined to put things right this Saints squad started things off at a pace that would have stopped any army in their tracks. Putting the home side right back on the defensive the opening Dumfries score came from outside centre Jack Steele. The try was converted by Alan Birdsall and from then on the visitors looked in control but some over anxious defending by Dumfries resulted in a penalty being awarded to RHC for off-side. Their no 10 slotted it between the posts to make the score 3-7.

The kick off was led by a furious attack on the home side with Dumfries Prop Craig Goldie taking the RHC defence back to their own 22 and from a well worked move by the Saints pack to put second row Michael Badenhorst  in for the try. The conversion was missed. When play resumed the referee determined to maintain discipline then yellow carded Badenhorst as he just happened to have the next offence of the game. Dumfries less one man had to settle down and play safe and a long ball kicked into touch gave the Saints a line out which was taken in the air by the other Dumfries lock Michael Thompson who carried over the score line. The conversion was missed.

The last quarter of the first half saw a relentless attack by Dumfries but some good defensive play by the home side resulted in several turn overs in the breakdown by RHC who looked dangerous going forward. All praise to the Saints defence who guarded their line well and eventually managed to get the ball into the hands of winger Andrew Whiteford who ran in the bonus try before the half time whistle.  Alan Birdsall converted making it 3-24  at the break.

Play resumed and after a penalty for Dumfries and a quick tap of the ball it was moved out the backs and then found the hands of standoff Jorden Kerr who ran over the line for a tremendous score. The conversion was kicked by John Carlisle. Determined to not give in RHC kept up their attack up and managed a good try from their inside centre but missed the conversion leaving the score 8- 31 .

The penalty count had to be watched by both teams as any offence was quickly punished by the referee with Dumfries receiving 2 more yellow cards within 5 minutes of each other. But even with reduced man power the Saints still managed to read the opposition well and a nicely timed interception by centre John Carlisle who ran in the sixth try. The conversion was missed. The rest of the game really belonged to the Saints with a 2nd try by Andrew Whiteford which was converted and then another unconverted try from Michael Badenhorst. That took the final score to 8-48 .

Next week Dumfries 1st and 2nd XV take on Dalziel at Park Farm for what should make for a fantastic day at the club in the run up to Christmas.      Squad:  Sam Hiddleston, Kenny Henderson, Jack Steele, John Carlisle, Andrew Whiteford, Jorden Kerr, Alan Birdsall, Craig Goldie, Zeke Dyson, Devon McDonald, Michael Thompson, Michael Badenhorst, Jamie Graham, Michael Scott, Ryan Cruickshank.  Subs:  Blair Milligan, Ben Johnstone, Paddy Coupar, Jack Johnstone.
